Coaching
What's the difference between mentoring, coaching and therapy?
There are a few similarities:
building and maintaining a relationship
commitment to the process
recognising progress
listening, presence, trust
evoking awareness.
There are also a few differences:
In mentoring people are looking for someone with lived experience that can say 'in my experience, this is the type of thing that works' and is usually done in a voluntary capacity.
In therapy: it is more about coming to terms with the past, how it shows up day to day, and how it affects the persons wellbeing. Therapy is often over a much longer period than coaching.
Coaching is set in the present day with a future-looking perspective. The coach's role is very much about partnering with the coachee to evoke change from within. This is to enable long-lasting change and is orientated towards what the coachee would like to discuss. This is usually agreed upfront, including with any other stakeholders e.g. if a company is paying.
Coaching is normally over a short time frame; I offer 7 sessions and will do no more than 14 without a significant gap, which ensures that a dependency does not start to form.
